Future vs Fantasy Quake

FVFOnline.com

One of the earlier (and yet more sophisticated) modifications to come out for Quake One was Future vs Fantasy. The game did not feature it's own levels, graphics, or sounds (in the beginning this would eventually change), but rather a rule-set the player had to abide by.

  1. Buy Quake One (not 2, 3, or 4) on Steam
  2. Download the Darkplaces Engine for Quake and install into your Quake Folder (works on Windows/Mac/Linux).
  3. Download and install Future v Fantasy into your Quake Folder

The player would choose one of several classes and their weapons and abilities would change as a result.

It was at first, straight up Deathmatch using these new classes; free-for-all killing, but eventually a Purge Mode was created in which two teams would fight one another for control of an Altar. One player would become the Deity and stand on or near the altar at all times. The opposing team would have to kill him in order to become the deity.

The teams would trade off becoming the deity, fighting for control of the altar. While on the altar the Deity can cast blessings on his teammates that can very well tip the balance if he isn't purged by the enemy team.

Later versions included an amazing Quest Mode where you play Co-Op (cooperative online play) through Single-player Quake or through custom single-player levels. Killing monsters earns you experience, allowing you to level up. Monsters respawn constantly and are more difficult in general.

Although Quest Mode became insanely popular, interest in the game dropped proportionally with the movement from Quake One to Quake 2 and 3. It would become almost entirely forgotten with the exception of a single server and a dedicated website you can download the mod at FVFOnline.com.

If you are looking to play Co-Op Quake with a friend or two, I personally recommend giving the Quest Mode a whirl at least once for a varied experience. I recommend the Deathmatch to groups of 4-12, and finally, if you have a group 6-12 players, then Purge Mode is an exciting game mode that has elements you won't find in modern games.

I only have one recommendation that FVFOnline.com does not have, and that is use the Darkplaces Engine with Quake to play it instead, you can download it here.

If you are interested in seeking other FVF Players, then you should use the FVFOnline forums here.
